PROPER
TEMPERATURE STORAGE AND HANDLING REQUIREMENTS FOR REFRIGERATED VACCINE.

IMAGE ON USAMMA'S
WEBSITE

01. THIS MESSAGE IS TO INFORM ALL ACTIVITIES OF THE PROPER TEMPERATURE
STORAGE
AND HANDLING REQUIREMENTS FOR REFRIGERATED VACCINE. REFRIGERATED VACCINE MUST
BE
MAINTAINED AT 2 TO 8 DEGREES CELSIUS OR, 35.6 TO 46.4 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT.

02. PROPER
TEMPERATURE MUST BE MAINTAINED AT ALL TIMES UP TO ADMINISTERING
THE VACCINE; (SEE IMAGE'S ON
USAMMA'S WEBSITE).

03. NUMEROUS SHIPMENTS OF VACCINE HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED AND/OR DESTROYED
DUE
TO EXPOSURE TO TEMPERATURES OUTSIDE THE PARAMETER WARRANTED. ACTIVITIES SHOULD
ENSURE
PERSONNEL HANDLING PRODUCTS ARE TRAINED ON THE PROPER COLD CHAIN MANAGEMENT
PRINCIPLES AND
PROCEDURES. WHETHER IN SHIPMENT OR IN STORAGE, THE VACCINE CANNOT
BE EXPOSED TO TEMPERATURES
OUTSIDE 2 TO 8 DEGREES CELSIUS OR 35.6 TO 46.4 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT.

04. PROPER STORAGE
DEVICES MUST BE IN PLACE FOR THE SAFEGUARDING AND HANDLING
OF THE VACCINE. ALL REFRIGERATION
MUST HAVE SOME TYPE OF TEMPERATURE-INDICATING
DEVICE. THE DEVICE CAN BE AS SIMPLE AS AN
ANALOGUE THERMOMETER TO AS
SOPHISTICATED AS AN AUDIBLE TEMPERATURE ALARM SYSTEM. BOTTOM LINE
IS THE
VACCINE STORAGE DEVICE MUST HAVE A TEMPERATURE READING CAPABILITY TO INSURE
THE
EFFICACY OF THE VACCINE PRIOR TO INJECTIONS AND THESE READINGS NEED TO
BE ANNOTATED TWICE
DAILY TO INCLUDE WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS. THE RECORDING OF
THESE READINGS WILL BE MAINTAINED AT
THE LOCATION OF THE REFRIGERATION DEVICE.

05. DOD ACTIVITIES ARE REQUIRED TO PREPARE AN
EXSUM WHEN A POTENTIAL LOSS OF
VACCINE POTENCY (I.E., VACCINE HAS EXCEEDED REQUIRED
TEMPERATURE PARAMETERS
OF 2 TO 8 DEGREES CELSIUS) IS SUSPECTED. DO NOT ASSUME VACCINE IS
UNSERVICEABLE
IF STORED OUT OF TEMEPRATURE. VACCINE NEEDS TO BE IMMEDIATELY PLACED INTO A
FUNCTIONING REFRIGERATOR, MARKED SUSPENDED AND NOTIFY THE APPROPRIATE VACCINE
AGENCY AND
SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE.

06. THE DISTRIBUTION OPERATIONS CENTER AT THE UNITED STATES ARMY
MEDICAL MATERIEL
AGENCY CAN PROVIDE INFORMATION ON OBTAINING TEMPERATURE-TRACKING DEVICES FOR
YOUR REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS.
