Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine (IXIARO) / Update

Reason / Information:

Japanese encephalitis vaccine (IXIARO) was licensed for use in children two months and older in 2013. Vaccine dosing for children age 2 - 35 months is 0.25 ml. Dosing for children and adults age 36 months and older is 0.5 ml. The presentation for both the pediatric and adult vaccine is a 0.5 ml pre-filled syringe with a red line mark on the syringe barrel indicating the 0.25ml dose. (See attachment A) (See Image on Message under Additional Documentation/Attachment).

The National Drug Control (NDC) number for both types of syringe is the same. If vaccinating children younger than 36 months, place a 2G advice code when ordering to receive the red-lined syringes. All syringe packages approved for use in children younger than 36 months clearly indicate children 2 months to less than 3 years of age: 0.25ml dose on the front of the box. (See Attachment B) (See Image on Message under Additional Documentation/Attachment).

Note: DO NOT use the unmarked syringe for children age 2 months to 35 months. DO NOT attempt to manipulate or withdraw 0.25 ml from the unmarked 0.5 ml syringes. Syringes without the red line may be used for administering vaccine to patients over the age of 36 months. Defer vaccination of children 35 months and younger until receipt of the correctly marked syringes.

Disposition / Instructions:

Continue to order/use the unmarked syringes, with an expiration date of DEC 2014 for patients that are 36 months of age or older until the supply is depleted.

Recommend separating and clearly labeling product if clinic must carry both presentations.
